Sixteen teams took part in the New Zealand Optimist Teams Racing Nationals on the first official day of the Toyota Optimist Nationals. The day began with light winds which made conditions tricky in the strong tide. However, as the day went on the breeze built in strength and the from early afternoon the teams were enjoying a medium strength south westerly.
Tauranga's team won the overall national event after beating Wakatere 1, and Napier 1 placed third. The international teams also held a teams racing contest, with team numbers being bolstered by a small contingent of New Zealand teams. The overall winner of this event was Australia.
